Today, in many countries in Eastern Europe and in Asia, International Women’s Day is celebrated. Yet, at the same time, in many countries women are still being oppressed, abused, not respected, not loved. As you think about the women in your life (grandmothers, mothers, aunts, sisters, daughters, friends) pray for Afghan women both in Afghanistan and those living abroad. Pray that they will persevere. Pray that they will find Truth. Pray that they will be granted freedom.
I stumbled upon a post by Hatef Mokhtar regarding International Women’s day and the persecution and oppression of women. It is an interesting read. At the beginning of his post, he states a famous Chinese Proverb that says: “Women hold up half the sky.” While researching this proverb, I found a statement about it by Barbara Spraker. She said, “This amazing image doesn’t describe women sitting under the shade tree while men hold up the sky. It doesn’t suggest women are competing with men to hold up the sky. And it doesn’t suggest there are simply more men to hold up the sky. Not at all! What it evokes is a picture of women fully bringing their unique gifts to
the task, bringing their ways of holding up the sky.”
One of my favorite sayings about women comes from Proverbs 31: 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. 31 Honor her for all that her hands have done, and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.
If you are a woman, this week consider hosting a prayer tea and praying for Afghan women to come to faith in Jesus Christ.
